Situated in the western tourist region, one hour's motorway drive North of Lisbon International Airport. This beautiful and unspoilt region is near Peniche, island on the Atlantic, which is surrounded by beautifull beaches. The course commands grand views of the ocean and the strange-shaped rocks along the eroded coastline.
The American golf architect, Cabell B. Robinson, designed the par 72 championship course. "This is the kind of landscape we architects try to create, but at Praia D'El Rey it's all here, naturally. Now it's my responsibility to protect it", he says modestly.
It is certainly one of the most picturesque layouts in Europe, set in extensive grounds of pine forest and undulating sand dunes with spectacular views over the Atlantic and the Berlenga Islands beyond. The course is visually stunning and tremendously exciting to play.
Cabell has designed the course to be the complete golfing challenge with bold deep bunkers, undulating greens, and natural sand border areas contrasting sharply with the lush green fairways. Praia D'El Rey, rated 13th best course in Europe by Golf World magazine.
Driving Instructions:
From Lisbon airport take the blue motorway sign indicating the A8 to Torres Vedras 73 kms North. On exit 13 signed posted Peniche there is a T-junction, turn left about 2 kms under a bridge and take the next left towards Peniche. Drive for about 9 kms until you reach Serra D'El Rei Village turn right in the centre large sign for Praia D'El Rey. Follow the road for 1.5kms and take a right turn signed posted Praia D'El Rey for about 4kms to the golf course. |
