The coures was opened in 1973 and designed by Frank Pennink, one of the best known European golf architects, Aroeira I is spread over a 345-hectare estate, at Fonte de Telha, about 20 Kms south of Lisbon. It is already considered to be " the Wentworth" of Portugal, because it is located in a pinetree forest, and 600 metres from a sandy beach.
The course is 6,040 metres from the back tees. There are plenty of bunkers, its more difficult as the round develops, the back nine is harder than the front nine, water features make the course a very pleasant place to play a round of golf. The 11th, a 362-metre par 4 requires a second shot of considerable accuracy as its green is defended on the left by a lake and on the right a frightening bunker awaits the slicers.
The 15th, a tough par 5 requires good positioning from the drive as there is hazards on both sides of the fairway. It is possible to reach the green in two. if not you will need a precise shot to the green to steer away from the bunkers and a lake. Its winding fairway is very attractive with pine trees on both sides of the fairway.The Portuguese Open was hosted here in 1996, 1997, and 1998, and various Ladies Opens and the Qualifying School of the Ladies European Tour.
Driving Instructions:
Cross the Tagus bridge “Ponte 25 de Abril”. 500 metres after leaving the bridge turn right - CAPARICA sign. Drive on IC20 until you reach COSTA DA CAPARICA. At the first traffic lights turn left - GOLF sign. Cross the village centre and continue straight ahead, following the GOLF and FONTE DA TELHA signs. Once you reach Fonte da Telha, turn left - towards the GOLF sign, about 600 metres until you reach the entrance of the golf course. |
